Welcome!  Or welcome back!

Welcome back to returning members of the IU Annuitants Association!  We hope your summer was glorious and that you’re ready for another year of fellowship through our association.

And welcome to our prospective members.  This issue of Newswatch is being mailed to newly retired faculty and staff.  We cordially invite you to join us.  Dues are modest ($5 for individuals and $9 for couples), and our monthly meetings are interesting and informative. The Annuitants Association also provides a voice for retirees in their continuing relationship with Indiana University.

Please return the form on the back of the enclosed letter, together with your membership dues.

September luncheon

The Annuitants will launch a new year with the annual fall luncheon on Sept. 12.  The doors will open at 11:30 a.m. at Terry’s Banquet Center, in Westbury Village off State Highway 46 West, with lunch served at noon. The menu features your choice of either roast beef and parsley potatoes or spinach lasagna, with
green beans almondine, garden salad, and fruit cobbler.

Please return the reservation form on the back of your letter with your check.

September’s speaker

Felisha Legette-Jack is beginning her second year as IU women’s head basketball coach.  She hopes to lead the women to another winning season and a third straight trip to postseason competition.  Last year’s team had an overall record of 19-14, going 12-3 in Assembly Hall.  They had key Big Ten wins against Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota and made it all the way to the third round of WNIT competition.

Coach Jack came to IU after four years at Hofstra University, where she led her team to its first-ever trip to the WNIT and was named conference Coach of the Year.  No stranger to the Big Ten, Coach Jack spent two years as an assistant at Michigan State after seven years as an assistant at Syracuse University, her alma mater.  Graduating with a double major in psychology and child and family studies, she is the second leading scorer and all-time leading rebounder in Syracuse history.

“It is character first, then academics, then basketball,” Coach Jack has said in defining her goals.  She and her husband, David, have an 8-year-old son, Maceo.
Meet the new president and provost

The University Club invites you to an open house and reception for IU President Michael McRobbie and his wife, Laurie Burns McRobbie, and Provost Karen Hanson and her husband, Dennis Senchuk.  The reception will be Friday, Sept. 14, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the University Club in the Indiana Memorial Union.  Complimentary heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided by the Gourmet Dining group.  Reservations are required. To take advantage of this opportunity to meet IU’s new president and new provost and their spouses, call 855-1325 or e-mail uclub@indiana.edu by no later than Sept. 11.

Preview of coming attractions

Annuitants Association program chair Nancy White and her committee – Marge Belisle, Gene Faris, Sharon O’Bryan, and Don Weaver – have arranged an exciting year of programs.  In addition to September’s meeting, put these on your calendar now:
Oct. 10 – 2 p.m., Dean Geraldo Gonzales, dean of the School of Education
Nov. 14 – 2 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff Jim Kennedy
Dec. 5 – noon, Heidi Gealt, director of the IU Art Museum
Jan. 9 – 2 p.m., Dr. Rajih Haddawi, director of Volunteers in Medicine
Feb. 13 – 2 p.m., IU President Michael McRobbie
April 9 – 2 p.m., Ellen Surburg, manager of Bloomington Hospital’s hospice/home care program
May 14 – 5:30 p.m., musical program and dinner

Webmaster needed!

In order to better serve our members, the Annuitants Association urgently needs a volunteer Webmaster to create a new Web site and keep it updated.  Although we all would agree it’s good that dues are the same as they were in 2004, it’s not so good that a Web search for the association takes you to a site last updated in March 2004.  If you’d like to put your talents to work creating and maintaining our Web site, please contact President Bob Ensman at 339-1357 or rensman@indiana.edu.

May meeting means music, morsels

The final meeting of the 2006-2007 academic year on May 9 at the Peterson Room provided a treat for the ears as well as for the palate.  Heather Hertling Narducci (daughter of Annuitants Association members Jim and Sandra Hertling) and her husband, Dan, both graduates of the IU School of Music, entertained us with selections from musical theater.  Charles Webb, dean emeritus of the School of Music, was their distinguished accompanist.  “Taking potluck” proved lucky indeed as we enjoyed members’ tasty creations.

Emeriti House events

Jerry Chertkoff and Dick Stryker are co-hosting a series of brown bag luncheons from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of the month, featuring stimulating discussions about interesting topics.  The luncheons are open to emeriti and IU Annuitants.  Bring your own lunch; beverages and cookies will be provided.  The Emeriti House is at 1015 E. Atwater Ave.
